Parched Spirits

Are you a poet? Do you have a way with words? Do you want to share your work with others? Parched Spirits will post all submissions, we know there is beauty in your thoughts.

Name: Olivia Harris
Location: Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

My name is Olivia Harris, I am thirty eight and work as a civil servant in Gloucestershire. I have always loved the beauty of our language, and feel that well-chosen words can be as exquisite as a rare painting, or a lovingly executed sculpture. Poetry has helped heal me, over the last, very difficult and painful years of my life. I feel ready now, to reveal a little more of my true self, and hope that others will share their poetry on this blog too. Email me, or post in the comments Don’t neglect your spirit. The Wish

If I could find one,
just one friend
to know me,
My loneliness would slip from my shoulders
like a dressing gown
revealing my naked person,
its beauty and its flaws

There can be no greater isolation
than to be around those,
who feel they know who I truly am

All that they know is their own projection,
a likeness of a person,
a rough drawn scrawl on the back of an envelope,
two dimensional, rushed,
a vulgar grasp of two, three traits
at best similar, but never the same.

As the years pass, the distance between
me, and the people who would know me
neither widens nor narrows,
but stays at an eternal, uncomfortable length.
For two paths that meander will surely cross at some point
parallel lines never meet,
the gap between our different life journeys
is filled
with ignorance and sadness.

I am no better.
when I look at colours, mine
is surely a different shade of violet to yours
and what makes my heart tighten,
may leave you tepid.
Yet I would have you share the things
that make my soul soar,
regardless of your own reaction,
because I want you to feel
what it really is like to be me.
Olivia Harris

I am desperately sorry if I’ve caused you any distress.

Carefree, a child among the rock pools,
Paddling, in the warm sandy ripples
Inviting water warm,
Calm with fishes
Strong over-arm strokes take him out a bit
The water’s colder here
Not quite so pleasant
A bit of cramp
No panic yet
Although there’s a current now
Bit more effort
Still in control
Bit of a swell
The sea’s gone grey
Full power now
The smallest tug of panic
Just as suddenly
Feet back on the sand
Wading ashore into the sunlight
Warm and dry
But turn and look
This is not his shore
The Rubicon has been crossed.

Olivia - that poem shows an immense arrogance.

Dr Maroon - the distress was fear that you no longer were my friend. Thank you for your beautiful poem - I will post it. It will be a comfort to many -I hope Miss Redhead reads it too -I think there is a message in there for her as well. Thank you again - here's to no more misunderstandings!

Art -perhaps it does, but it also shows a vulnerablity and honesty. Sometimes how we feel may not be all sunshine-and-pretty-flowers, and sometimes the very reason for one's loneliness may be an unpleasant one -in my case, arrogance is an unfortunate burden I carry. However, acknowledging these traits in ones personality -can help us to get closer to happiness.

Doc M, that is a lovely poem indeed! You do have a touch, I must say! I have always ( ever since I first stumbled on your blog) enjoyed your writings, be they poetry, humour, or intrigue.

And Olivia, you are right, there is something in there for me ~ for anyone that has experienced trials & tribulations, and endured, to triumph over them.

Olivia, this poem is lovely ~ I do not see it as arrogant, but simply a statement of what is. Besides which, one must have a bit of arrogance, else one be trampled and tossed about in life by those more arrogant. No, arrogance is a tiny part of a life preserver, gird up about your core ~ when all else fails, and you are left to sink or float, one must rely upon that preserver, and self worth helps keep one afloat.

Don't confuse a feeling of self worth with arrogance Miss Redhead. From you r poem earlier it's clear you've had/are having troubles in life so I am not going to preach but not everyone you meet is trying to fight you.

Olivia - I make that comment because other posts/comments you have made show a very inclusive personality considering the many pisstakes & insults you receive. I don't see it as a major criticism but just another side to your personality we hadn't seem.

That is entirely my point, Art. You need to be less simplistic about people. I may well be inclusive and tolerant towards the people who are unpleasant on my site, but that does not mean that I am not allowed an opinion about how others perceive me I don't think it is arrogance entirely, rather an honest acceptance that if I want people to know the "real" me, then I am going to have to work even harder at getting them to understand who I am.
Your very comment proves to me that you decided "Oh, Olivia is sensitive and seems to be wuite forgiving". Partly true - yes, but I am also very resilient, and desipte having been treated badly in my life, I refuse to change my personality and give up all hope of finding love again, and making friends. So if *that* is arrogant - then I suppose I must be arrogant, but then if I am arrogant then your noticing at this late stage after having a totally different percetion of me makes you guilty of the thing that I mention in the poem -the inability to credit me with more than two very obvious personality traits, and just supports my argument, which would not then make me arrogant, would it, but rather just observant. As you can see from that argument - there is no answer to the arrogant/who am I really question, and that is exactly how it should be. Never believe you know anyone completely when you know so very few and very superficial things about them. Be a little more open minded Art, I am trying to be a better person, why don't you give it a go too.

yes, art, you really DO need to be a bit more open-minded. For instance, you have absloutely no idea who I am, or how I face the challenges in life. All you see is what I present, either by poetry, blog, or comments. If you did know me, you would know that while I might be a ~ fighter ~ ( or survivor), I most certainly do NOT believe that everyone I meet is trying to fight me. QUITE the opposite. I am not a defensive walled in person, and actually, if you ever DID read my blog, and DID try to form an opinion based on that, you would know it. Now, it isn't often that I explain myself or my actions to others, in fact, it is EXTREMELY rare, however, since I DID post a poem to Olivia's site that WAS personal in nature, I feel oddly compelled to do so.
And while I would agree that self-worth is not to be confused with arrogance, I would still have to say that one needs a little bit of arrogance ( not overwhelming amounts, not extreme levels, not grossly exaggerated or publicized) ~ that is what can help a person believe they can succeed where others may have failed. Above and beyond self worth, there is something called ambition, and ambition is not all bad. And I believe that arrogance has something to do with ambition. I don't think heavy arrogance is good, not at all, in fact, it's disgusting, and self-centered ~ HOWEVER ~ a little arrogance ( ie: I think I can do that, I can succeed because I have some sort of advantage above others, be it knowledge, information, etc) is necessary. It's part of human nature to be arrogant enough to believe that we are the only things that matter on this planet, that above all, we will succeed. And do you know what? I think that's ok. I think humans ARE more important than animals, and plants, etc. Doesn't mean we can't be good caretakers of the earth, but hey, we are arrogant enough to assume that we ARE the caretakers, and that's a good thing. There is a time and a place for arrogance, moderately, yes, but arrogance just the same.
