Parched Spirits

Are you a poet? Do you have a way with words? Do you want to share your work with others? Parched Spirits will post all submissions, we know there is beauty in your thoughts.

Name:
Location: Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

My name is Olivia Harris, I am thirty eight and work as a civil servant in Gloucestershire. I have always loved the beauty of our language, and feel that well-chosen words can be as exquisite as a rare painting, or a lovingly executed sculpture. Poetry has helped heal me, over the last, very difficult and painful years of my life. I feel ready now, to reveal a little more of my true self, and hope that others will share their poetry on this blog too. Email me, or post in the comments Don’t neglect your spirit. Share your words

Ring

Scathing sister:

Greener than you know.
You choose your stone unwisely,
Flint heart.

Warm her soul, Ruby!
Quench her ire, Sapphire!
Light her way, Diamond!

Bilious to the core, Medusa
Your web of snakes cannot harm me
My heart was turned to rock
By someone crueller

My blade of truth shall be the mirror
To destroy you, to refine you
I will wear down your jagged edges
I will imprison you with golden walls of kindness
You will reflect.

Olivia Harris

As always, formidable!

Don’t be too hard on her Olivia, life’s too short. I'm sure it’s the dust, the filth, the downright squalor, (I don’t mean Cheltenham). She has not your outlet, but must sting like a scorpion to void her venom.

May I, with Burns Night approaching, quote the great man?

O, wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us
An' foolish notion:

In the common tongue,

O would some power the gift give us,
To see ourselves as others see us!
It would from many a blunder free us,
And foolish notion.

Wonderful stuff.

You may be interested to know that my stone is diamond. Bright, hard, and yet just an allotrope of soft black carbon. Loved the Medusa and the shield bits. Class. I did Latin and Greek (ancient) at school you know. Can’t remember any of it.

Well really!
I'm not surprised, this is what you get if you don't maintain your site, Riff Raff.
Extract the digit!

I liked your Classical references too. I am still doing Classics. Not sure what my stone is.

Hi, like the analogy and the greek reference. Will come back for sure.

Wrote a little something on the sirens sometime ago. Do take a look if time and inclination permit. :)
